Yummy food to fix the blues

Over the weekend the weather was cold, rainy and well it sucked to be out doors in general.

My wife got sick of me and vice versa throughout the 48hrs of indoors activities. We decided to start to cook and make some funny treats. We made Banana Bread and Blue Berry Muffins, but the real gold was our Sweet Potato & Caramelised Onion Quiche.

Bellow is the instructions on how to create your own when you feel the need.

Preparation Time : 30 mins

Cooking Time : 90 mins

Ingredients:

1 tbs olive oil
1 large brown onion, halved, thinly sliced
2 tsp brown sugar
2 tsp wholegrain mustard
2 (about 600g) orange sweet potato (kumara), peeled, cut into 2cm pieces
1 sheet (27 x 27cm) ready-rolled frozen quiche shortcrust pastry, just thawed
185ml (3/4 cup) thickened cream
200g danish fetta
3 eggs, lightly whisked
2 tbs finely shredded fresh basil

Method:

Preheat oven to 200°C. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until soft and golden. Add the sugar and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until onion caramelises. Add the mustard and stir to combine. Remove from heat.
Meanwhile, cook the sweet potato in a medium saucepan of boiling water for 5 minutes or until tender. Drain well.
Line a round 22cm (base measurement) fluted tart tin, with removable base, with pastry and trim any excess. Place in the fridge for 15 minutes to rest.
Cover the pastry base with non-stick baking paper and fill with pastry weights, rice or dried beans. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove paper and weights, rice or beans. Bake for a further 10 minutes or until golden. Remove from oven. Reduce oven temperature to 180°C.
Cover pastry base with caramelised onion and top with sweet potato and fetta. Whisk together the cream, egg, and basil in a jug. Pour into pastry base. Bake in oven for 40 minutes or until golden and set. Serve with, mixed green salad leaves or coleslaw.

With the temp rising and the skin cells burning I would like to welcome summer and say good bye to any chance of quality waves on the east coast of Australia. I might also take this time to ask a few questions and officially turn on the comments section of the blog again as I now have finished my minimalist approach to the blog.

At what age to farts stop being funny? (I just turned thirty and I still laugh everyday at them.)
Why does my dog love pissing on the kitchen bin if he is alone for more than 5 hours?
Has anyone notice that this wooden surfboard / bodyboard craze seems to be catching on to a mainstream crowd? How long till billabong starts to sell loin cloths made from hemp to get the total soul experience?
Each morning I drag myself to the coffee machine pump out a strong short black, sip it at a slow steady pace, stare out the window until the lower regions start to wake then excrete the previous days waste. I am any different to a cow in a paddock?
Will magazines that feature less adverts and more content and there for be sold in different ways (online and retail outlets) ever take off or will the newsagents always be there taking their cut?

Obnoxious weed problem.

There is a problem on the coast the further north you go in America. The weed, and I am not talking about the sweet Mary Jane, marijuana or grass. Thick stinking sea weed that covers everything and at low tide can make for some interesting times entering and leaving the water. Yesterday I slipped on my ass, the day before I rode a wave 20 feet along a kelp covered rock shelf I walked along hours before. But never fear my pot loving brethren the tales of blueberry soaked resin filled buds are thick here also, so pack your bong and be careful whilst walking on the kelp this is my advice.

You can define their features by their shinny helmets, extra optional straps, protective vests and is your vision is impaired listen out for sounds of excitement from the shoulder of any swell under 5 feet.

Yesterday around one in the afternoon Thomas stumbled into the studio reeking of booze and cheap perfume. I asked him what was new and the latest Thomas headlines read like this. Thomas recently flew back to Sydney after preparing for the summer in his home town of Noosa, once leaving the airport he was picked up by a close friend. They drank a lot. Night ends, Thomas and his friend go separate ways. Tom finds a nest of another friend near by to sleep off the the drinks and that nest even housed a female bird which showed him shelter in his time of need. In non related drunk activities he has done his ankle in whilst skating so its the size of a loaf of bread. He is now helping I AM NONE put some finishing touches on the next video THRASHED. We talked about his recent cover on Movement, how it's now very fashionable to own a tough dog and if cootes was ever coming home from Ireland.

After two cups of black instant coffee, he was on his way again to meet up with some more friends and eat cheap steak.

Mike Wells has been rumored to tear pages out of magazines, turn the covers over on the news stands all in disgust of the quality of its goods.

I have feared the moment when Mr Wells picked up a copy but I think we did ok and now he is our critic / homo erotic editor. Read Mike's review below.

So….

Here we go again, yet another bodyboard magazine promising to break away from the usual trash that I have become so bored with. Maybe I’m being a little spoilt but is it too much to ask that after I put a magazine down, I won’t want to swear to never read another issue?

This happens.

A lot.

I’m a realist though. I know how hard it is to put out superior products having shaped for a bodyboard company back when they cared about making boards. Not garbage that is easy to pump out to keep the bottom line in the black.

Bodyboarding has become stale for me.

I lose the fire to get out there being stuck doing the grind these days. So I, like so many other humans look to the medium of mags to keep me interested.

That is the problem.

The garbage out there these days is filthy.

Have you seen Bodyboarder (or ’ing I cant remember what) mag lately.

Shit off. Seriously.

That’s where our heroes at le Boogie arrive.

Edited by an all round nice guy / guru. Art direction by a barrista. Doesn’t sound too great when you hear that. Untill we realise that Phil Gallagher is that nice guy/guru.

Luke Shadbolt is that barrista.

This got my attention.

Usually when someone from “our side” starts something, it is fantastic.

That person has the knowledge to do what the public want. (See early No Friends, the first few issues of Movement, Waldron Bros, cough, DLUX, cough cough, booger king etc.)

Le Boogie isn’t a traditional magazine.

Le boogie isn’t so much celebration of the rider/wave. Well it is but its also about showing off what you’re staring at. The photo little fella, the photo.

Bringing back the ol’ days when you can see more than the blatantly obvious. Talking to people because they have something decent to say (Winchester/Mattick) not just to fill a caption.

Le Boogie is not a traditional magazine.

Do a photo trip and just run the photos? Madness! Awesome!

Brilliant actually. Use four guys that have recognisable style and Boom!

Actually showing photographers photos. Not a photo taken by a guy.

Photographers that use (and teach in a few shots) things like depth of field and slower shutter speeds.

Le Boogie is not a traditional magazine.

The only bad thing, for me, and this is being harsh, you guys, ahhh, how do I say this?

I found some spelling mistakes. There, I said it. With so few words I found a couple.

But i'll proof read your next issue if you like.

I loved it.

Now please don’t break my heart.

We took it on as project and after a few hard days we have transformed it into a nice space we we can both work, shoot and meet and greet our clients. 7.47am and the front door of my house receives a rather stern beating the type that is either the cops or someone with a real emergency. It was neither which is nice in a way, it was a homo erotic dressed courier in a bright yellow shirt and some rather short ill fitting shorts in the middle of winter? Oh its been a while coming and when my wife ripped into the package before i could even get the signature required on his clip board and started to flick through it's pages i got a little glimpse into what it will be like for all of you when the issue arrives at your door step.

It's a real nice piece of work this issue. Not long now till we all get to rip the pant's off the first issue.

the bad end of flying..

Got the low down on Rocky's bung kidneys today, seems the kid bruised them up pretty bad a week before heading off to Chile and in the middle of the flight to LAX the body said enough is enough. "when you piss blood which is leaking from inside your gut you start to get a little worried" said Mitch. Good to know he is A OK and considering a little sth coast mission later in the week.

A terrible day at the office.

On sunday just passed I had one of those days. Long drive, bad servo food and way too much coffee. I was with Joe Clark and Jake Stone looking to shoot some images for the issue 2 of le boogie magazine. We launched our ski at around 10.30 am hoping to be surfing by 11.30. The ski ride was estimated to take 45mins so we allowed an hour due to having 3 guys on a ski with camera equipment. 1 hour and 30 minutes later we all realized we must of missed the spot along the coast somewhere along the way, we were all starting to really feel the effects of such an epic journey at sea when the crisp offshore breeze died and the cold dull onshore rolled in. We knew the only thing to do was to cut our losses and return to the launching spot. By now the last the last thing on our minds was fuel and safety. The lacerations from my wetsuit rubbing against my genitals for that amount of time was the only thing filling my mind. With each second the wind grew stronger and the chop got bigger and the ride got harder. We did come across the wave by now onshore and hardly inviting, but by our calculations it would of been pumping earlier. We decided to head back to safety. The ride home was alot worse due to the weather and then all hell broke loose. We started to run out of fuel in the middle of no where and close to some very large waves and cliffs. We had not seen another human all day and the sun was falling fast. We spotted the only boat we had saw all day and used the last drops of fuel to get within eye sight of the boat. We screamed and yelled until by some lucky start they saw us and the old boat started to turn.

They came to the rescue of us and threw a rope to attach, lets say it sounds simple but attaching a rope to a ski in the middle of a raging ocean with three dudes freaking out and the recuse boat still moving due to the conditions at a steady rate is no easy task.

We all ended up in the ocean and the ski was set afloat.

The boat picked up Joe and Jake and I tried to attach the rope which in the end worked out sweet until the swell and tow rope flipped the ski.

Off the boat i dive again and skim out to the ski and flip the sucker back over. Now I know ski's are meant for the ocean but if there is one thing they hate its being upside down in the drink.

Anyways man strength kicked in and I flipped it back up right. Then the boys threw another rope to me which i pulled my way back to the boat. Totally shaken up by the whole ordeal I sat on the floor surrounded by fishing rods and empty beer bottles wondering just what the hell happened. I asked one of our bearded rescuers " you guys catch anything besides us today?" He replied " just one big tiger shark earlier and nothing else really made it into the boat due to the bronze whalers taking our fish when we were reeling in, just ended up with heads". Stoked sharks to just to top it off. We made our way back to safety and tried to just recap on what had gone on, but it was just to crazy. By now it was dark and cold. Today I tried to fix the ski as we could not get it started. I took it to the local dealer and they worked hard all day on the sucker.

Final result, $806 worth of labour and parts. Not cool seeing though I shot not a single frame that whole day. No photo's no money.

But the good days far outweigh the bad this is just one i thought i would share. And Brad (hughes) if your reading this in Chile don't stress the ski is better than ever I promise. Brad was nice enough to lend me his ski to use while he was away.

Just a little thank you to the guys who saved us, the nice lady who sold us cold beer at the end of it and the hard working Matt who fixed the bird.

And remember always put safety first when putting your life and others at risk.

Forget the riots, forget Greg Bird glassing his girl and think back to when the Island comp was the bee's knees of the bodyboarding calendar.

Well this year its all on again and with a new format its become the black sheep tour with no IBA tour riders being aloud to compete for whatever reasons.

Sunday will see the trials event go down on the famous Cronulla point from 8 am.

Its going to be tough with good waves predicted and a hot field of shred heads pulling on the rashie this year.

I will be covering the trials for RIPTIDE and also have a stall where you can buy a copy of DLUX for a very special sunday price!

Tropical rum diaries..

Well I took a holiday with some good friends over the last week. We took off to a tropical island and really went loopy. We weathered out a cyclone. Drank all day every day out of coconuts. Tasted some local fish, had a wedding. Threw new parties every night and now I am at home with a fist full of fun photo's. here are just a few.

I will be back into work so expect more action packed images coming real soon.

red blob attacks Tahiti

It seems like the whole of the surfing world is heading to Tahiti this week. I have dropped a few guys off at the airport and the phone has been off the hook with offers.

I wont be heading there but you can bet there will be some amazing gear coming out of the joint in the next week or so. Keep an eye on the usual sites for images and well written dribble about the sessions.
